Kendrick Lamar released his latest album To Pimp a Butterfly a week early last night. The album, which features collaborations and samples from indie great Sufjan Stevens as well as Isley Brothers, Michael Jacksons, “Smooth Criminal,” and James Brown. Upon a first listen, I like the album, which you can stream on StereoGum through Spotify and purchase on iTunes.
Oddly enough, there seemed to be some confusion about the release date. Seeming relaxed about the early release date, Kendrick was seen tweeting about the 20th Anniversary of Tupac Shakur’s Me Against The World and tweeted out this positive message:
However TDE CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith seemed upset tweeting out against Interscope and the wrong release date.
Despite this slightly odd reaction which made the whole situation worst – had he just played along no one would have known it was a mistake – I am sure the album and Kendrick will do very well. Have a listen and let us know your thoughts on the album and the controversy.
