Winter is ALMOST over, dare I say. Montreal is facing yet another blizzard as I am writing this. It has been a long and cold one, but for me, music is the best way to face it, whether you need to kill an hour in the cold, stay awake when its pitch black outside at 3pm (!!!), or heck, get your ass in gear to go see a show, in an actual venue, outside your living room.
My life was never really in any danger, but here are the albums of my winter, some new, some not so new, but very, very good at making you look past the season.
Wild Cub – Youth: because even though we are drawn into two distinctive influences throughout the album (80’s synthpop vs tropical beats), the recently re-released album is a great listen, and sure to get you moving on even the coldest day. My favorite, Wishing Well by Wild Cub on Grooveshark
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Is Is: because Karen O’s vocals are amazing on it, because the sounds is as raw and wild as their first album’s, and because I still am not tired of hearing it after 7 years. An EP this good is a great way to keep warm while killing 17 minutes in the cold. My favorite, 10 X 10 by Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Grooveshark
Jay Malinowski and the Deadcoast – Martel: because Jay Malinowski released an album that is warmer and more eclectic than anything we’ve seen from him to date, retelling his family’s history in a surprisingly stylish way. This is probably my favorite new album of the winter, which is why it is here, and because I can now dance and sing along to most of the songs. What better way to keep me warm and happy. My favorite, “Up the Cross” (http://music.cbc.ca/play/artist/Jay-Malinowski-The-Deadcoast/Up-The-Cross)
Hospitality – Trouble: because I love a girl who can sing, and because I was shocked that this band had escaped my radar until now. The haunting pop songs and up beat melodies are absolutely perfect for lazy winter afternoons. My favorite, Last Words by Hospitality on Grooveshark
Metric – Live It Out: because yes this album is old, but I had never much paid attention to it, which was a mistake on my part. It was this past January that, wondering what Metric was up to, I decided to finally get to it, and I wasn’t disappointed! My favorite, Patriarch on a Vespa by Metric on Grooveshark
BONUS – because 5 isn’t enough
Louis C.K. – Hilarious: because this might shock you, but listening to a comedy show at work is GREAT, and Louis C.K. is just exactly my type of funny. This show in particular, because I love the way he makes fun of how people talk. And it’s a brilliant show. My favorite, The Way We Talk (Hilarious) by Louis C.K. on Grooveshark
Pixies – “Indie Cindy”: because this is just a song off of their comeback EP1, BUT IT IS NOT JUST A SONG. Also because I got to see it live this winter. Here it is:
